"I've taken very good care of him." The girl looked at Mary with pride. "He loves me."

"I'm sure he does." For some reason the girl's very defiance touched her. Jake had said she had nothing and no one, and now this child she loved was being taken away, too, yet she was meeting this latest deprivation with spirit and dignity. "And I realize there are all kinds of things I need to learn about him again. Perhaps you could help me?"

A flicker of joy crossed the girl's face, but she quickly masked it behind a careless shrug. "I don't see why not. Babies are easy." She stood up. "Sit down and I'll let you hold him. Babies love to be held, you know, even when they're sleeping. It makes them feel safe." Her face became shadowed. "It's important to feel safe."
